Find The Match

Today as students learned more and more about place value, they played a matching game where they matched base 10 pictures with the number it represented. This is great practice! If you wanna make your own game at home, a straight line represents a 10 and dot represents a 1. So the number 42 would be 4 straight lines and 2 dots! Understanding place value is the key to every other 2nd grade math concept. Practicing a lot now will help us later!

AR Tests Commence

First 2 100s of the year!!!

WOW! I am blown away by how great the first morning of AR went. Students were taking tests like crazy and making lots of 100s, 90s, and 80s. That is excellent! We are always happy with 80 or higher on AR. Be sure that reading is happening every night, at least 2 books, so that the students are ready each day for new tests. This routine will take a few weeks to get down, but trust me, once they get going, it will be awesome! The growth will astound you!

Every morning after they take AR tests from the books they read the night before, they are then able to get new books from the library. It is SO important that they bring their library books every single day. In fact… the books are more important than the homework folder. Always ask them if they have books, especially the first few weeks.

If you would like to track their AR progress, you can have an email sent to you in real time as soon as they finish a test. Click here, http://www.mrdearybury.com/parent-portal.html then scroll down to the bottom left of the page to register to receive the emails. You will see where it says to click. Your child should know their AR login and password to get you in there to set it up. Let me know if you have questions about signing up. Happy reading and happy 2nd Monday!

Tag...You're It!

Tag... You're it! That is my signature line to parents as students leave for home on Fridays. I have done my best to make the week fun and unlike any learning experience they have had. As they leave on Friday, its your turn to continue that fun learning!

I like that saying so much that I made it the title for my class newsletter. The newsletter will be printed on lime green paper every Friday and sent in the homework folder. There is always something that you need to read. It takes a strong partnership between teachers and parents to grow successful children. The newsletter is one more way I am keeping you informed. I am here to help. Email if you need me! Happy first Friday of school...and TAG, YOU"RE IT!!!

Happy Birthday Arthur!

Today we held our official Arthur's Reading Club kickoff by celebrating Arthur's birthday! All week long we have read the story Arthur's Birthday, and today was his big day! We had balloons, party hats, and ice cream sundaes. Big thanks to St. James UMC for their help in making today exciting! We sang, we danced, we learned the secret password and handshake, and we learned all about our goals for the year. I cannot wait to see how these kids grow this year!!!

Things I do for children.... Arthur ears made from a hanger!

Even Woody Wildcat and Officer Bibler joined the party!!! Happy Birthday Arthur!

Words That Help

Today students learned about words that help and words that hurt as we continued growing together as a class. We read Berenstain Bears and the Bully and learned a great lesson from Sister Bear and Tuffy. The first few weeks if school are so important in the life of a successful classroom. Teaching kids to love and respect everyone is the most important lesson of all. Ask your students to tell you some of words that help. It'll make you proud!

We Are Exceptional!

Today I played the song "Exceptional", by China McClain and we had a great discussion about what makes us exceptional. The kids then made their own posters to share with the school about why they were exceptional. Of course we then listened to the song again and had a great dance party. These kids have moves! Building the spirit of community, teamwork and togetherness that happens these first two weeks is so crucial to our success this year! Laying the foundation is the most important piece! Happy Day 2!
