Padlet

A cool site I stumbled across a few years ago called Padlet has been a great addition to the class! It is a site where kids can communicate with me during class and at home. I often use it as an assessment tool so I can quickly see where everyone is regarding a certain topic. I can type a question on "the wall", and students can type their replies. Many nights, I may encourage students to answer the question at home. Their responses come to my phone. When responding they should always start with their name and first initial of the last name. While it does take them some time to type answers at first, this will build their typing ability. They absolutely love it!

Below is a snap shot of them learning about it today. Half the class did this, while the other half learned on Dreambox. Then, we switched places and the other half wrote on the wall. If you would like to see the answers they wrote today, click here!  I encourage you all to stop by here tonight and let the kids write a message to show you what they have learned. The Padlet link is available around the clock at mrdearybury.com on the student links page.

Dreambox

Did you know that each student has their own account for personalized math learning on Dreambox? This is a fantastic program for every student to spend some time on each week. To log in, students use the same username and password as they do for AR. They use this program multiple times during the week at school, and it will make a great addition to their nightly routines. This is way better than any kind of worksheet I can send home and is closely aligned with what I am doing in class. Click the link below and look for the Dreambox icon at mrdearybury.com

Sculpting With Sculpey

Art isn't just for art class here at WHES. Our school is an Arts in Basic Curriculum school, and we strive to have the arts as a part of the regular ed. classroom routine. Today, at the close of our study on Henry and Mudge: Under the Yellow Moon, students were given "Sculpey" to use to create their own pet dog. Mudge was a great pet for Henry, so students were challenged to create their own "pet" Mudge. They used sculpting tools to add details such as the face, fur, and hair bows. Lots of fun was had as we learned on this rainy Friday!

Parts Of A Letter

Today we wrote thank you notes to one of our Donors Choose sponsors. We are so grateful for their support that it is an honor to write them thank yous. As always with the first thank you package of the year, I taught my students about the 5 main parts of a friendly letter: heading, greeting, body, closing, and signature. Of course, we had to sing and dance about it so it would stick in brains. Enjoy!

Woody Wow Lunch On The Trail

Here are some pics from our Woody Wow picnic! We had a fantastic time eating on the WHES nature trail. Ethan shared a spooky story about a "ghost train", and the cafeteria made us a great bag lunch! Anneliese's mom for sending in the Arthur cake squares a surprise for our behavior celebration fun!

Even & Odd War

Checkout this fun game we played this afternoon to learn about even and odd numbers.

0,2,4,6,8... Even numbers are so great!

1,3,5,7,9... Odd man out every time!

Then call out directions for the students to make even or odd groups. This was our first day doing this. I think it will get better with time. Not too bad for the first time.

A Pirate's Tale

Today our class was able to be the audience for a great show about conserving the resources of the planet. Thanks to Duke Energy for teaching us about all the different ways we can save energy at home. If you would like to order a free energy saving kit for your house, go to www.Xmarksthekit.org

One of our classmates, Joe was able to be a part of the show! He did a great job. He deserves a Woody Wow for his great performance!!!
