Pirate Day

Arrrrrrrrrrr.... Yo Ho Ho me mateys!!! Today we enjoyed a fun filled Pirate Day here in 3rd grade! As the kids arrived this morning they found instructions for making a treasure map and writing a pirate story on their desks.

I had theses treat bags for everyone. Inside was the best pirate fodder that Oriental Trading could offer!!! I had stickers, cannon"balls," Jolly roger pencils, mini telescopes, and eye patches.

The kids came dressed in their best pirate garb!!! Check out each group below!

Using this pattern, the students made their own pirate hat.

A few years ago I scored this skeleton Jenga at Pier One on a Halloween Clearance table for 4 bucks. I knew it would come in handy one day!

Each kid got to pose in our pirate pic spot. Yes, they are all on here. How could I leave anyone out???

After kids designed their own Jolly Roger flag, read about Blackbeard's adventures on the seas off of Carolina, learned pirate vocabulary, and learned about "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything," we headed outside for some group photos.

These were taken around the pond in the courtyard just outside the classroom. I love this one of them in the tree!

Of course, I was dressed the part as well. Thanks to my friends Eddie and Pam for helping me look the part!

At the end of the day, an urgent message was delivered to the room that set us out on quite the treasure hunt through the school!

Here is the final clue in the cafeteria cooler. X marks the spot!

In our excitement over the treasure I forgot to snap a pic of the treasure box, but it was loaded full of emeralds and rubies...aka: ring pops!!!

Now, like any good pirate, I am off to an afternoon snooze!!!

What Big Eyes You Have

Check out this neat creature that visited us on the playground at recess. It was the first time I had ever seen one. It's called an Eyed Clicking Beetle. It uses the big black "eyes" on its back to warn off predators. It uses its clicking ability to flip over when it gets stuck on his back. It was also very good at playing dead as a defense mechanism. So glad we got to see him!!!

WOW. What a fun afternoon we had. Team building activities with water is lots of fun. Thanks to my 3rd grade cohorts this day was loads of excitement. Hopefully they will all sleep well tonight.
