Cafeteria Fairy Tale

Today our cafeteria turned into a far away land filled with a princess, a dragon, a knight, and a queen. There was even a wicked duchess and her silly son! Of course there were two guards that kept everyone in check! Our class really enjoyed the program. Thanks to Rich Robinson and the theater department at USC Upstate for investing in the public education and sharing your talents with us!

Painted Lady Larva

Today is one of the most fun days in second grade. Our Painted Lady Butterfly larva arrived and the kids got to pick out their very own larva to raise over the next few weeks. The were able to hold it, name it, build its habitat, and write the first pages of their book that will detail the whole experience. I love this day! I love my job!

Mr. Dearybury Meets The President

It was a day I will never forget! As I shook the hand of the president, he told me that he wished he had my last name because it was too much fun. I replied to him, "Well today sir, you are an honorary Dearybury." The room erupted with laughter as you can see on the faces around us. So humbled and honored to have represented South Carolina and my profession in this moment. March 3rd, 2014 will not soon be forgotten!

Art As Assessment

Every test question doesn't have to be an essay or multiple choice. Art work shows great understanding of student learning. These were some of my favorites from today's Cassowary assessment.

Cassowaries

This week we have been learning about Cassowaries. Do you know what they are? My students do! They can tell you all about them! Today they were all working so hard on their posters to display what they have learned. Check out the link to learn more.

Screen Chomp

As you all know, I love using iPads in my classroom. The kids are engaged and excited about learning any time I use them. So, basically we use them all day every day. On Monday we used one of my favorite apps, "Screen Chomp." It is a basic white board app that allows students to annotate and record their voice at the same time. I use this in a variety of ways from assessments to learning their prior knowledge. Yesterday I asked students to explain basic front-end addition. They made their videos and emailed them to me. Click on the links below to hear and see their work. They did a great job!!!
