Song Writers!

Monday while I was running I came up with this catchy little diddy to the tune of "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain/" to help students learn the 6 regions of South Carolina. I was in the middle of writing multiple verses when I got the idea to let the students write a verse for each of the other regions. Today was the day!!! I put students in cooperative learning groups and asked them to brainstorm all they knew about their assigned region. As they organized their thoughts, they attempted to work them into the verse. Take a peek at this video to see the learning happen!

This was their final product!!!

In the Piedmont there are hills and va-a-leys
In the Piedmont there was textile industry!
At the foot of the mountains
Lived Catawaba, Yes sir ee,
While the Yemassee were chillin' at the beach.

Great job guys!!! All of the other groups did fantastic. The song will be featured in our 3rd grade program next year. Next week we will record them all and post them here. Stay tuned!

Class Pet Part 2

Our pet put on a great show for us today. She learned how to jump from the tree to the bird feeder. I was right in the middle of a lesson when the whole class screamed, "whoooaaa!" As I turned to look at the window, there she was. She sat perched in the middle of the bird seed pile. All day long she was jumping back and forth. I thought about closing the blinds, but it was just too much fun. Guess we are gonna have to name her!

Pizza Math

I waited til late to post this. It is part of my math review tomorrow. This is my leftover pizza from lunch on Saturday. This is just one of many ways to review and practice fractions. Tomorrow, ask your kids what fraction I ate and what fraction remains. Hopefully they will get it right.

Do You See What They Saw?

Today I asked my students to look at my pitiful drawing of a flower and tell me what they saw. Their answers show you how deep their thinking can go. What do you see?

Multiplication Revolution

Today was a day your students have been working towards since the first day of 3rd grade! General Hall, from the Spartanburg Kiwanis Club came to award those students who achieved mastery of all 12 times tables on a 9 minute test. I am so proud to say that all 20 of my students met this goal. Thanks to the Rap CD, the Monster Mash, daily drills, weeks of tests, and all of your hard work at home, the students were successful! Here are a few pics from the ceremony! Thank you General Hall and the Kiwanis Club!

Rainy Day Recess

Ever wonder what we do for recess when it rains? Take a peek. I think they would rather it rain some times. They love indoor recess. I love the bonding they do during this time, not to mention that most of them always work on something educational the whole time.
