2 Digit Addition & Subtraction
We are starting to practice 2 digit addition with regrouping this week. This is a skill that takes lots of practice. Below you see a screen shot of one of my favorite sites for students to practice on. It has both addition and subtraction, and it provides students with a pen on the screen to do the work. I would suggest at least 1-2 nights a week on this site over the next several weeks. Just click on the picture to take you there now. Happy practicing!!!

Ocean Creature Project Week
Ocean Creature Project Week is upon us!!! All last week in class, students worked through the process of researching an animal, gathering information, printing pics for a display, and practiced sharing info with their peers. They are now working on creating their poster displays. The work they are doing in class is preparing them to create their own independent presentation on an ocean creature of their choice. By modeling and practicing the process of creating a project poster board in class, students then understand the expectations when completing a project at home. Their independent projects are due by Friday. These Jellyfish ones should be done by Wednesday. I cannot wait to see the work they bring in. It is gonna be a fun week of learning and sharing!

Jellyfish Research
It is so important for students to know how to use a computer for research and creating presentations. Today, students learned how to save images from the Internet onto the desktop so they can use them on their in class jellyfish project. They have been researching jellyfish all week long and the pictures will add to their in class projects they have been working on. It is amazing what kids can do when you just give them a chance. They were so proud of their accomplishments. Tomorrow they start on their finish products.

Partner Practice
Every Wednesday in my class, students become the teachers during our partner practice reading time. For 15 minutes, students read with a friend and give them advice on how to make it better. They practice fluency, expression, and comprehension. They ask their partner questions about their reading and encourage each other when they do great work. I love this time each week because the kids are so good at it! Of course, it took a few weeks to get it down back at the beginning of school, but now they are in a groove! So proud of how they are growing this year!

Math Fact Fun
Everyday for the last ten minutes, I allow students to participate in "drill time" to help with their basic math facts. I have lots of cool strategies to learn to add, but sometimes just good old-fashioned flash cards do the trick. They love this time as you can tell from the noise... but whoever said noise meant that learning wasn't taking place? I love that the students are actively engaged during this time. They LOVE it! Be sure to practice at home with flash cards or an app. The math will be moving into regrouping (borrowing and carrying) very soon!

Welcome Back!
I hope you all had a fantastic holiday break! As always, it went by really quickly. But, I soaked up every moment I could with my family and friends and enjoyed every second!
Today as the kids came back, we had the privilege of Skyping with a group of teachers from Alabama. They were wanting to see the way I teach a lesson via Skype. As my class often does, we decided to sing the lesson to them. The learned our 7 Continent song sung to the tune of "It's a Amall World" and our Frozen parody, "Do You Want to Read a Story?" The teachers loved it, and the kids did a fantastic job. Below is a pic of our class from the Alabama end of the Skype. They tweeted out the pic as soon as we were done. So glad my students have these kinds of unique opportunities.
